Port Augusta to Adelaide
The street outside was marginally busier than yesterday but no real options for breakfast.
So off we went and as per yesterday through a very barren landscape. The Tomtom soon had us turned off the main road and we headed in the direction of the Southern Flinders Range. The road was single lane bitumen but as rough as guts and many dips into dried up waterways. It seemed to go on and on and we were thoroughly sick of it and doubting the parentage of Tomtom by the time we arrived at a junction of a decent road. It was obvious that in one direction would lead us back to the A1 so we thought we’d just make life easy for ourselves and we headed in that direction. After a couple of km’s Robyn suggested we pull over and check the map. Best suggestion of the day award. We turned around and wound our way through a giant cutting and a perfect winding motorcycle road.
It was a pleasant 24 degrees which made for very pleasant traveling. The scenery was lovely with far off vistas to a far away range looking over crops and pasture lands.
South Australia is definitely the bread basket of Australia. The first town we came to was a pretty little place called Wilmington, a landrover museum on one side and more importantly a likely looking cafe on the other side.
Our tummies were rumbling by now, unfortunately despite the quaint appearance and friendly fellow running it we had to settle for a cup of tea and a sausage roll.
So on we went, the landscape stayed much the same throughout the day and we passed through many little towns and villages. Some were thriving farming hubs, others were quaint and historic relying more on tourism but seemingly prosperous, others unfortunately were run down and hanging on by their fingertips.
By the time we hit the motorway into Adelaide the temp was 35 and we were very hot. Unlucky I think too as looking at the weather forecast for the next week or so the temp will be lucky if it gets to 22!
We chose not to stay in the CBD, instead we’re at the southern beach suburb of Glenelg. It has a lovely beachy vibe with massive hotels right on the foreshore. A very cool shopping street with lots of cool bars and restaurants.
We had a walk along the beach and bought an ice cream.
Later we went out for a nice meal and returned to the beach to catch the last of the sunset.
