Barkly Homestead to Cape Crawford

We had a really good ride today, totally different landscape and what a treat.

380km of almost all single track with asphalt in varying states of repair / disrepair. For the first couple of hundred km’s the traffic was sparse with only the occasional road train to pull over for.

There is no gas or actually anything else until we reach our destination, we didn’t even see a building.

The road started in scrub, and then moved into wide open praire, nothing to see in any direction except a big blue sky. An awesome experience to feel so small and insignificant in such a vast landscape.

Not long into this section I saw beautiful copper bronze snake basking itself on the road. It had to be 6 foot long. Luckily I missed it but like the lizard the other day, when we looked back it had gone.

A few kms later I saw another snake, this one was smaller and more silvery, dead and being attended to by carrion feeders.

Regular stops at rest stops are a must, many of them have a windmill and water tank which is a godsend for us as we can wet our buffs and t shirts, which has a lovely cooling effect for the next 50 or so kms.

We have booked into the Hearbreak Hotel in Cape Crawford. Despite the name Cape Crawford is not near the coast.

The epic scenery is not the only thing that makes us feel insignificant!  Check these out!

  3. Yes we’ve noticed everything is big up here. The food is also substantial which is not good for my waistline.
