Nanutarra Roadhouse to Coral Bay
An early start today, possibly earlier than recommended but we started slowly and there doesn’t appear to be too many kangaroos in this area. We had 255km to cover and we had arranged a tour at 9:30.
On the positive side the light was incredible as the sun rose over the horizon.
A flat landscape with the occasional rock outcrop on the horizon.
The large termite mounds really stand out in this barren land. The other feature was rock bunds. Piled up bunds varying in height from a metre or two through to maybe 30-40 metre high sections and as long as the eye can see in both directions. Just like a set of giant waves frozen in time.
We turned off the main toad and the landscape became even more barren and we steadily lost altitude as we headed for the coast.
We arrived in Coral Bay and it was like being transported to another planet after the last few days. This beach is picture postcard.
Obviously were too early to check in but the lady at reception was so nice and told us where to park and where we could change. We grabbed a quick breakfast at the local bakery and then checked in for our tour. We have booked a 2 hour snorkel tour on the local reef. While we waited on the beach we just gaped in awe at the beauty of this bay.
Coral bay is a holiday destination with caravans the most poular accommodation by far. As it is the school holidays the place is packed.
We joined some others and boarded the glass bottomed boat for the short trip to edge of the reef.
This trip did not disappoint, apart from the beautiful coral and fish we saw several turtles and 2 types of sting rays. The fish life in this area is varied and abundant. We were in the water for almost an hour. We followed our guide and she pointed out a heap off stuff that we would otherwise have missed.
A very special experience that we will not soon forget and worth the early start.
True to her word the lady at reception had our room ready for us when we got back and it is very nice indeed. We spent the rest of the day relaxing, soaking up the atmosphere and enjoying the comfortable 27 degree temperature.
An excellent seafood dinner rounded off a brilliant day and with the prospect of a lie in tomorrow all is well in our world.
OK thanks very much! Such a good story with pictures - now we're going to have to schedule up a lap of the lucky country as well. Extreme FOMO :-)
