Ceduna to Streaky Bay

The idea was a lie in this morning but mother nature had other ideas, we were woken about 6 by a lengthy period of massive thunder rolls. Blimey I thought we were being invaded. But apart from a few splotches it remained dry. We had a leisurely breakfast at a local cafe and then packed up and were on the road by 10. An easy day down a long straight road as we head down the Eyre Peninsula. I saw several Shingleback Lizards crossing the road and managed to avoid them all and also my 3rd snake of the trip, a little fella about 1 metre long slithering across in front of me, I also avoided hitting it.

The weather was fine and sunny with a temp of 30. Certainly the warmest it has been for us in a few days. We called in to a very pretty beach called Smokey Bay.

Absolutely beautiful turquoise coloured water and white sands. A popular thing here is to tow your caravan along the narrow sandy beach and camp in a designated spot with a shelter. Several rigs were doing this, you would literally be camping on the beach and 5 metres from your caravan door you’d be in the water. Brilliant.

Another few km along the coast we arrived at our desination, Streaky Bay.  A very pretty little holiday spot with the obligatory jetty and old hotel which is so common in these parts.

The skies looked ominous and sure enough it began to rain and the temp dropped to the low 20’s.

We took advantage of this downtime and sat in the bar and did some planning as accommodation is harder to get the closer we get to civilization, especially on the weekends.

The end is in sight for this trip, so we pencilled in all our stops through to Melbourne and we have a tentative return date.

The rain stopped so we went for a walk around the little village and out on the jetty past the fishermen and a pelican posed for us sitting on a streetlight.

  1. You could consider getting close to Melbourne, then turning and going back to Melbourne clockwise. Roads and surrounding terrain can look remarkably different travelling the other way?

    1. Yes you are absolutely right but I must also consider whether I want to stay married or not!
