Port Douglas to Cape Tribulation

We awoke this morning to torrential rain. Absolutely bucketing down. The weather forecast for the next few days shows rain most of the time. We debated whether to continue into the rain forest or cross the dividing range into the Tablelands.

Whilst we were discussing this the rain eased so we packed up and headed into the town for breakfast. The weather looked a bit more promising so we set off. Its not very far but the further you go the narrower the road becomes. They had a terrible cyclone here about 12 months ago and there is a lot of road reconstruction going on.

We arrived at the Daintree river and caught the ferry across.

Soon after we were held up at road works for about 20 minutes. We then climbed up and up until we arrived at the summit lookout. A really lovely view but we were marooned there until the next phase of the one way road system allowed us to go.

It has been a lovely day in the rainforest with the shade of the trees and the mostly cloud cover kept the temperature in the mid 20’s but of course the humidity is high here.

Next stop was the Daintree Discovery Centre and we opted to go on a walkway through the rainforest with one of those informative info phone thingys.

We spent about an hour on this walk, it was really well done. The highlight was ascending 112 steps to a platform 27 metres into the forest canopy. Amazing.

Then onto our accommodation for the night. A small but nice cabin.

We walked to the beautiful beach but heeded the crocodile warning sign and opted to swim in the pool instead.

After our swim we saw some people looking intently at a tree so we went in investigate, are big cobweb with a big spider in the middle of it . A female Orb spider and two much smaller males. Freaky looking but harmless, or so I am told.

We are so glad we chose to come here, It is truly an amazing place.
