Still Chillin

We have still been waiting on our bike to clear quarantine which has been making me quite nervous. I did spend 4 days cleaning the bike before it shipped but was still apprehensive. Anyway this afternoon we got word that the bike has now passed the inspection and will be collected tomorrow (Friday) and transported to the shipper’s premises. So all going well we will collect it tomorrow afternoon and we will be on our way on Saturday.

In the meantime we have filled in time with walks in the local neighbourhood with Kairo the dog. This suburb is very nice, a leafy tree lined streets with many very big and stately looking homes.

Having the dog in tow has been a real eye opener. Many people we pass in the street comment on the dog and the ladies swoon and give her a big pat. Robyn tells me that if ever I find myself on my own and lonely all I have to do is get a golden retriever puppy and I won’t be lonely for long!!

    Glad uou're nearing the end of the waiting, and so pleased to be able to "ride along" on the trip. Sounds like you've had perfect weather, and a great base to launch from. Safe trails !

Karumba to Cloncurry

For today and the next couple it is all about getting through somes miles and managing ourselves in the heat. We are currently carrying 10 litres of water and we can increase it to about 14 if need be. We are in the outback now and a breakdown or mishap can have dire consequenses if we are unprepared. So we have plenty of water, food and shelter as well as two emergency distress options, we have done what we can.  Anyway it was 25 when we set off and the sun was still low in the sky when we set off at 7:30. For the first hour we rode directly into it so I kept my speed to a reasonable pace as there was much roadkill to avoid. There is always much bird activity around these sites, at home we might see one or two Hawks dealing to a possum but over here it’s not unusual to see twenty or more. Melbourne

After an uneventful flight we were met at the airport by Siobhan and Alex who have generously offered to accommodate us until we can collect the bike. On Sunday we visited a winery for lunch which was very nice. The weather is very pleasant right now with a real spring feel about it. Then after we returned home we took Kairo the golden retriever for a walk along the banks of the Yarra, then back for a couple of beers and took in the women weightlifters on telly. Monday was time for paperwork and after 2 frustrating hours on the phone trying to arrange the compulsory road insurance I gave up and we took the tram into town to visit Vicroads in person. There was a bit of a queue in front of us but when we got to the desk the girl was very helpful and we were all sorted in 10 minutes. I get the impression they still have a way to go in getting this sort of thing organised online. Anyway only the quarantine inspection to go now and we can hit the road.

Preparations

After much debate and thinking about where our next major trip will be, we have decided on Australia. The bike is enroute to Melbourne as I write this. We will collect the bike there on about the 12th of August and will circumnavigate the continent in an anticlockwise direction. So watch this space and come along for the ride and enjoy our adventures with us.  A big shout out to BMW Wellington for giving us the transport crate, 360 logistics for making the shipping so easy and to Rob Vandenberg for sharing his experiences and to everyone else who has shared their snake, spider, roadkill stories which have encouraged us no end.
