Adelaide

We have had a very nice day today. Quite a bit cooler, overcast but fine and low 20’s.

After breakfast at the local bakery we wandered off to the tram station. After a chat with the customer service guy at the station we boarded the tram for the city. It was only about a 25 minute ride, good value for $2.50.

We got off at Victoria Square and headed for the Adelaide markets. A wonderful foodie paradise. Bespoke
cheeses, fish stalls, French pattiserie, fantastic butchers, fruit and veg, you name it it’s here  We had a good wander around, taking in the sights and smells, lovely.

We then wandered into the main shopping area Rundle Mall and wandered about the shops.

We had a cuppa and pastry and then set off to the university district. Such a nice feel to this place. It was very nice seeing students wandering about and there were some who were obviously graduating.

We then took a stroll through the very nice botanical gardens, we only scratched the surface of it really. There is a light show on at the moment and there are many special sculptures dotted about the place which are lit at night. Unfortunately we won’t get to see it. One sculpture I reckon looks like Robyn’s brain after a 700km day on the bike!

We then visited the Adelaide museum which has amazing Indigenous display. Extremely interesting about ancient and recent history. The recent history explained how the charter of indigenous rights was drawn up which was subsequently rejected by the majority of Australians. They weren’t asking for much, just a voice really. I wonder how well it was presented to the general public. An opportunity lost but at least a conversation has taken place.

There was also a giant squid on display, it is displayed vertically through glass panels over 4 floors!  Amazing.

We also visited a dinosaur display of creatures that once inhabited this land. The ancestors of the Kangaroo was particularly interesting and the connection to the modern version was plain to see.

Our feet were telling us we’d probably walked enough so we headed back to the tram but had to detour back to the market for a spot of lunch.

Our day was completed with an excellent seafood dinner at a specialty restaurant that Robyn had managed to find.
