Mount Surprise - Undara
It was nice and cool on our back track to the Undara Lava Tubes for our guided tour. The trip was uneventful except for a few errant cattle beasts wandering over the road.
We lined up for our tour and the guide introduced himself as Marama from Christchurch!
Anyway these lava tubes are amazing. They were formed about 190000 years ago during a 20 year period of volcanic eruptions. The lava flowed slowly as the land is so flat and the outer layer of lava solidified as the inside lava continued to flow leaving hollowed out tubes. Astonishing.
After our tour we had a bite to eat then trekked up to a lookout point, surprisingly we were the only ones there, I can’t think why no one else wanted to trek up a hill in 30 degree heat with the sun high in the sky.
We then headed back to Mount Surprise and gassed up ready for the long straight road tomorrow.

Those lava tubes are awesome ! Amazing the forces of nature !!
