Mareeba to Mount Surprise

We are having a much easier day today with only about 260km to travel. We still got away at a reasonable time and headed to Atherton where we had breakfast. It is quite cold, only mid teens and during our breakfast it began to rain. So after a wander about we donned our waterproof liners and we visited the quaint towns of Herberton and Ravenshoe.

We also stopped to visit Queensland’s widest waterfall, Millstream falls.

The Tablelands is a particularly beautiful area, the bush is very nice and the far off vistas are simply a sight to behold.

We also travelled on Queensland’s highest road at about 1150 asl. We spent most of the morning on above 900 metres so the temperature remained

Slowly we descended the Kennedy Highway and turned onto Savannah way.

This highway stretches from Cairns to Broome though not all of it sealed.

As we travelled along this road the bush got thinner the road got straighter and the temperature climbed.

We are going to visit the Undara lava tubes tomorrow and would have stayed in Undara but the accommodation is over budget so we have travelled 40km to Mount Surprise and will back track for our visit.

The only surprise about Mt Surprise is that as far as I can tell there is no mount!

Three more bikers arrived and after they unpacked they came over for a chat. Turns out they are siblings, two brothers and their sister. Aged from mid sixties to early seventies. Each had their own big bike. Such nice people and we have an invitation to stay when we get south of Perth.

We have been on the road 3 weeks and covered more than 5000km’s. We have seen and experienced much and are enjoying this trip.
