Day 1. Melbourne to Lakes Entrance
First up, a very happy birthday to my travelling mate on this trip and through life. Such a wonderful wife, as witnessed yesterday in the petrol station, a guy struck up a conversation with Robyn asking about our trip and said “aw you guys are living the dream, I wish my wife would get on the back of a motorbike”.
Second up, a big shout out to Siobhan and Alex for putting us up for a week, it was only supposed to be a couple of days! But they are great company and treated us very well. It was nice to get to know them better. I will miss my morning cappuccino made by Shivvy every morning. I will also miss Kairo the golden retriever pup.
So up reasonably early (for us) and after a nice breakfast cooked by Siobhan we said our goodbyes and set off. The weather was about 11 degrees with a light drizzle on and off.
A wet road with tram tracks and some crazy drivers made me a bit nervous but we were soon on the motorway leaving the city behind. We decided not to be too ambitious on the first day and mostly stuck to the main roads. We passed through mainly cattle country with rolling pasture and some lovely views. The traffic was light and extremely well behaved, not too much speeding that I noticed. We stopped along the way in couple of nice little towns and each time passers by would strike up conversation and to wish us well.
We have stopped in a pretty little seaside town called Lakes Entrance. It is obviously a very busy tourist place in the summer but fairly quiet now. We went for a walk and took in the beach which stretches as far as the eye can see in both directions. I don’t think it would a kid safe swimming beach but the estuary is very nice with lovely clear water.
We had a lovely meal of Tiger Flathead fish in a nice restaurant and a brisk walk back to the motel.
So that is day one done, it is nice to be on the road again.
Happy Birthday Robyn (for yesterday). Nice comments Mark. Looking forward to following your adventure 🏍️
