Airlie Beach

A chill day today. After a leisurely breakfast we went for an exploratory walk. It is such a pretty place with lovely beaches and a laid back little tourist street of shops. There was a market on as well and out in the harbour, sure enough was a cruise ship, funny how these two things go together.

Quite overcast and it looked like it might rain so we headed back to out hotel just as it began to spit. We sat on the deck having coffee and it rained a bit harder and made the place smell so fresh.It didn’t last long and the sun came out again.

Yesterday on the way here I got a message from the BMW that it was low on oil and sure enough when I checked it was on the low side. I found a Kawasaki dealer a few ks away and went off in search off the black gold. No problem, back to the hotel for a top up.

I went down to get on the bike and got chatting to one of the cleaning ladies who gave me loads of ideas for places to see between here and Cairns and in that general area.Super friendly and helpful. As I was typing this stuff into my phone she saw how cack handed I am and showed be a couple of tricks to help me.

We spent the rest of the day chilling, swimming in the pool, planning and we also booked a snorkeling excursion for tomorrow.

    Sounds very "leave what you're doing, and come here now" !
    Don't miss the coffee and chocolate museum inland from Cairns direction Atherton I think..
    You make holiday m/bike travel look easy, and you don't even have hard panniers 😅 - we're enjoying the story so far :-)

Preparations

After much debate and thinking about where our next major trip will be, we have decided on Australia. The bike is enroute to Melbourne as I write this. We will collect the bike there on about the 12th of August and will circumnavigate the continent in an anticlockwise direction. Melbourne

After an uneventful flight we were met at the airport by Siobhan and Alex who have generously offered to accommodate us until we can collect the bike. On Sunday we visited a winery for lunch which was very nice. The weather is very pleasant right now with a real spring feel about it. Then after we returned home we took Kairo the golden retriever for a walk along the banks of the Yarra, then back for a couple of beers and took in the women weightlifters on telly. Monday was time for paperwork and after 2 frustrating hours on the phone trying to arrange the compulsory road insurance I gave up and we took the tram into town to visit Vicroads in person. There was a bit of a queue in front of us but when we got to the desk the girl was very helpful and we were all sorted in 10 minutes. I get the impression they still have a way to go in getting this sort of thing organised online. Anyway only the quarantine inspection to go now and we can hit the road.

Day 1. Melbourne to Lakes Entrance

First up, a very happy birthday to my travelling mate on this trip and through life. Such a wonderful wife, as witnessed yesterday in the petrol station, a guy struck up a conversation with Robyn asking about our trip and said “aw you guys are living the dream, I wish my wife would get on the back of a motorbike”. Second up, a big shout out to Siobhan and Alex for putting us up for a week, it was only supposed to be a couple of days! But they are great company and treated us very well. It was nice to get to know them better. I will miss my morning cappuccino made by Shivvy every morning. I will also miss Kairo the golden retriever pup. So up reasonably early (for us) and after a nice breakfast cooked by Siobhan we said our goodbyes and set off. The weather was about 11 degrees with a light drizzle on and off.
